More on Campaign Finance

Yesterdays report by the ONW made me glad that I am no longer in the race for Council. I don't think that I could have competed against those types of dollars being spent. Jessica King is really running away with expenditures. With more than $6000 already spent, and the potential for $2000 more, she may be buying a seat.

Meredith is following in a distant second. That is unusual for an incumbant needing to spend that much money to get re-elected. Most times, a new candidate will spend money to gain name recognition in a short time. Meredith doesn't have that handicap. She has been on the council for 2 years and is no stranger to the public. For her to have to spend that much money is a sign of her vulnerability.

The next point of interest actually lies with Mr. Neilsen and the fact that he is reporting that he hasn't spent ANY money. How is that even possible? Were the signs that we see all over town free? I will stop today and look to see if there is a "paid for by" on it and who actually paid for it. I had heard that he did a phone bank prior to the primary but I haven't been able to confirm that. Did anyone get a call? I would like to hear from someone who did.

Mr. Bain has shown that the bid for re-election is not free but has also shown restraint from spending an obscene amount of money. He has carried himself very well in the forums that I have seen and is showing that he is worthy of another term. He definately does not fit the bill of being a "rubber stamp". He educates himself and votes what he feels is best for the city as a whole without showing favor to special interest.

Mr. Cornell is also showing that spending money isn't a priority for election. He is second in spending of the non incumbants but like I said before, it is about gaining name recognition when you are a first time candidate.

And finally we have Tony Palmeri. He has remained exempt and still garners quite a support of voters. All I can say about that is, how does he do it?

Kent, how does Tony do it? How is he able to have such a mass of yard signs and full color literature, and still able to be exempt from reporting? Will he make an ammendment soon? Will he make an ammendment to his financial report that will only come to light after the votes are counted??

We are more concerned with moneys of outside the Oshkosh area.

$612 donations from Progressive Majority Wisconsin.....in itself may no seem like much but.....
the real irony here is that Progressive Majority Wisconsin PAC is run by Doug Burnett, who was convicted in perhaps the largest corruption scandal in state history. Why is this PAC interested in getting Theil and Bowen elected?

Follow the money and you can see whose vulnerable:
As for spending lots of money on signs, we've all seen the huge signs your pal has. This man brags about being on the council for 7 years but he's spending a tidy sum on signs much larger than the normal yard signs. They match his ego to be sure. Let's recap: He's got 7 years on the council and his expenses are okay. But if someone with only 2 years or no time on the council spends a larger amount of money on their campaign, that's wrong in your eyes?

Last night's council meeting a lesson in stupitiy. No one knows how to bring back a resolution?
WHAT A TRAGIC display of government for the people!

This is the type of thing that is happening everywhere in the private sector. This is why those in the public sector need to know it's not "Business as usual" and understand we taxpayers can not continue increasing our property tax payments to allow them greater wage and benefit increases.

Circuit City to lay off 3,400, hire cheaper replacements

Circuit City Stores said today it plans to cut costs by laying off about 3,400 store workers and hiring lower-paid employees to replace them, and by trimming about 130 corporate jobs.

Circuit City, the nation’s No. 2 consumer electronics retailer behind Best Buy Co. Inc., the store workers being laid off were earning “well above the market-based salary range for their role.” They will be replaced with employees who will be paid at the current market range, the company said in a press release.

The Richmond, Va.-based company also plans to outsource its information-technology infrastructure operations to IBM, a move that is expected to cut IT expenses by more than 16 percent. About 50 of Circuit City’s IT workers will move to jobs with IBM and remain on the Circuit City contract. The other 80 corporate positions will be cut.

The changes follow the company’s announcement this winter of planned cost-cutting measures and management moves to improve sales and cut expenses.

As anonymous that posted at 1:36pm already may have guessed, his/her comments were not published. If they had been a bit more polite rather than rude, I may have posted it.

To answer some of their remarks though, I did talk of the extreme amount of money that Candidate King has spent on her campaign. It is insane to spend more than what she would earn in a 2 year term to gain a seat on any board or council.

Next, Mr. Neilsen has had signs out for several weeks. He would have had to pay for them by now.

Finally, this post was about the Council. Not the School Board or Mayor race. That is why there are no references to either group of candidates.

As for them though, Mr. Esslinger is currently on the council. Last year when he ran for re-election there were 3 signs out. This is a Mayor election and he put out signs for Mayor as did Mr. Tower.

Another thing to think about, 2 years ago, Mr. Castle spent more than $10,000 on his campaign for Mayor. Spending $2000 isn't so bad in comparison.

Besides, Ms. King has spent 3 times that amount. I guess it will be up to the voters to decide, eh?
