Today we read in the ONW the potential problem one of our downtown businesses is facing just by being a tenant in a Ganther building.
Although it is unfortunate, it is a problem that an innocent business owner faces when they "partner" or lease space that relies on the license of a known delinquent taxpayer. After all, it is not the Baer brothers fault that Ganther and his partners have not paid the taxes on the 100 block. But they are the ones that depend on the liquor license that Ganther holds for that property. It sure is easy to say that exceptions should be made, but should they?
What do you think?

No, exceptions should not be made. In the end Ganther will pay his taxes just before the deadline.
Although I feel for the Baers, I don't think an exception should be made because it would be tantamount to telling Ganther it's OK to not pay his taxes. The guy needs a wakeup call. The ordinance should be enforced, but the city should also declare that they are not going to do any business with Ganther anymore - a "two strikes and you're out" kind of thing.
The Baer brother were well aware of the circumstances that surrounded the 100 block and Mr. Ganther. If you decide to do business with persons that continue to not pay their local taxes, you have no one to blame but yourself. I believe that the City should be looking at ridding it's self from any further connection to Mr. Ganther and his construction firm.
If the article in the Northwestern was an effort to gather sympathy for the Cranky Pat's establishment, it has failed!
OCDC's comment were even more troublesome, that they would suggest that the city that they work for would overlook deliquent tax payments seems irresponsible at best. We deserve better from our economic development agencies...if that is what you want to call what they do.
OCDC and the Chamber of Commence
should relocate their offices to the 100 block. They keep pushing for downtown redevelopment. They can have corner-stone offices. Such a move could help a failing the business-man,the city could get the tax money owed and save the TIF.
I'm sure Cranky Pat's would even throw in a beer with the free pizza for the celebration!
I think we should add the Convention and tourism folks to the previous suggestion. they have move their offices HOW MANY TIMES!
They want higher room taxes downtown development and to control the venues at the Leach, they should at least put their money where their mouthes are, in downtown!
YEP. I totally agree and each time they relocate they had to redecorate and reconfigure office space to suit someones wim at the time.
Talk about wasting money. Remember
when their offices were located at the Convention Center? A venue they were "supposed"to be marketing?
A very convenient location and could market the downtown as well... Apparently that was not good enough for more...
